Properties

Macrolide bacteriostatic antibiotic of the second generation from the group of macrolides with a wide spectrum of action. Violates protein synthesis of microorganisms (binding the 50S subunit of the membrane of the ribosome of a microbial cell).

Indications

— infections of the lower respiratory tract (bronchitis, pneumonia);

— infections of the upper respiratory tract (pharyngitis, sinusitis, otitis media);

— infections of the skin and soft tissues (folliculitis, erysipelas);

Dosage and administration

For adults, the average oral dose is 250 mg 2 times / day. If necessary, you can assign 500 mg 2 times / day. The duration of the course of treatment is 6-14 days.

For children, the drug is prescribed in syrup at a dose of 7.5 mg / kg body weight / day. The duration of the course of treatment is 7-10 days.

Contraindications

— in the treatment of clarithromycin, it is forbidden to take cisapride, pimozide, astemizole and terfenadine; in patients taking these drugs simultaneously with clarithromycin, there is an increase in their concentration in the blood. This may prolong the QT interval and develop cardiac arrhythmias, including paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, and ventricular flutter or flicker;

— severe violations of the liver and / or kidneys; — hypersensitivity to antibiotics from the macrolide group.

Side effects

The most common complaints from the digestive system: nausea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. There are reports of rare cases of hepatitis with elevated levels of liver enzymes in the blood and the development of cholestasis and jaundice.

Oral allergic reactions have been observed with oral clarithromycin, ranging in intensity from urticaria and skin rash to anaphylaxis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Isolated cases of thrombocytopenia and leukopenia have been reported.
