Properties
A broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent, a derivative of nitrofuran. It has a bacteriostatic and bactericidal effect in urinary tract infections. Nitrofurantoin is active against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Enterobacter spp., Proteus spp. It is effective mainly in urinary tract infections.
Indications
Infectious and inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract (including pyelonephritis, cystitis) caused by microorganisms sensitive to nitrofurantoin.
Dosage and administration
Acute urinary tract infections:
Adults: 1 capsule 2-3 times a day for 7-10 days.
Chronic urinary tract infections (long-term treatment):
Contraindications
Severe violations of the excretory function of the kidneys, renal failure, oliguria, insufficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, pregnancy, early childhood, hypersensitivity to nitrofurantoin, heart failure stage II-III, cirrhosis of the liver, chronic hepatitis, acute porphyria, lactation.
Precautionary measures:
The risk of developing peripheral neuropathy increases in patients with anemia, diabetes mellitus, electrolyte imbalance, vitamin B deficiency, severe renal failure.
Side effects
From the respiratory system: chest pain, cough, shortness of breath, pulmonary infiltrates.
From the digestive system: a feeling of discomfort in the epigastrium, anorexia, nausea, vomiting.
From the side of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system: peripheral neuropathy, headache, nystagmus, dizziness, drowsiness.
