Properties
Dexamethasone is a synthetic hormone of the adrenal cortex (GCS), which has a glucocorticoid effect. It has an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effect, and also affects energy metabolism, glucose metabolism and (through negative feedback) the secretion of the hypothalamic activating factor and the trophic hormone of the adenohypophysis.
Indications
allergic diseases: control of severe or disabling allergic conditions.
Skin diseases: bullous dermatitis herpetiformis; exfoliative erythroderma; fungoid mycosis; pemphigus; severe erythema multiforme (Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
Endocrine disorders: replacement therapy for primary or secondary (pituitary) adrenal insufficiency. Gastrointestinal diseases: to remove the patient from the critical period with: Crohn’s disease; ulcerative colitis.
Dosage and administration
Doses are set individually for each patient, depending on the nature of the disease, the expected duration of treatment, the tolerability of the drug and the patient’s response to therapy.
The recommended starting dose for adults is 0.75 mg to 9 mg/day.
Contraindications
For short-term use according to «vital» indications, the only contraindication is hypersensitivity to the active substance or auxiliary components of the drug.
The drug is contraindicated in patients with galactosemia, lactase deficiency and glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome, due to the fact that the drug contains lactose.

Side effects
From the endocrine system: often — transient adrenal insufficiency, growth retardation in children and adolescents, adrenal insufficiency and atrophy (decrease in response to stress), Itsenko-Cushing’s syndrome, menstrual irregularities, hirsutism, the transition of latent diabetes mellitus to clinically manifest, increased need for insulin or oral hypoglycemic drugs in diabetic patients, sodium and water retention, increased potassium loss.
Metabolism and nutrition disorders: often — decreased tolerance to carbohydrates, increased appetite and weight gain, obesity.
From the nervous system: often — mental disorders.
